Valdez
was my first major destination because I'd heard it was a small
scenic haven with an RV park right on the water. I knew by the time
I finally made it to Alaska, I would be ready to just stop for a
week or two and rest in the slow pace of a small town. One of the
advantages of getting here early in the season is that the parks
are pretty vacant and I got an incredible deal here at Sea Otter
RV Park. It's the only park right on the water with the added perk
of incredible snowy mountain views on all sides. Kathy let me park
sideways so I had the best view in town from all windows.

This
is the back of my chair showing where I'd sit with my coffee in
the mornings and read in the afternoons when I could tear my eyes
away from the sparkling water and the enchanting mountains. Binoculars
are a real treat to have here - besides the closeup of wildlife,
the patterns in the snow-covered mountains are fascinating and an
endless game of "that looks like
."

I
could have taken a hundred pictures a day just showing the play
of the light, clouds and shadows moving across the snow capped mountains.
Sometimes I would just sit in wonder, telling myself "I did
it - I'm really in Alaska!"

From
all sides I was surrounded by these beautiful mountains. The colors
were constantly changing as well as the mood of the sea.

In
the morning it was calm and like glass - in the evening when the
tide moved back in, its little waves were fun to watch.

I
was thrilled to see this bald eagle flying over my house - even
more so when I managed to get a picture of him.
