I took
off on the Seward Highway from Anchorage intending only to visit
Portage Glacier today, but met up with some great people who informed
me of other things I shouldn't miss. While I was told there's not
much in the town of Whittier itself, the road to it off the main
highway is a pretty drive partly through an interesting tunnel that
is only one lane, so the two directions have to share it at different
times. Traffic going into Whittier goes on the half hour and from
Whittier on the hour. There's a track in the middle so it is also
shared by the train that used to be the only way by land into Whittier.
The tunnel is not for those suffering from claustrophobia - it is
very confined and goes on for two miles.

Another
amazing view from the highway. Under perfectly clear skies, it was
an exceptional day.
